I did the unthinkable and decide to quit my well paying job, where my boss likes me and I get along remarkably with my coworkers. I survived 6 layoffs during the economic turmoil. But I was just not satisfied. Of course I could wait and see if there's a job in line before I decided to leave my comfort zone but what fun is that? Ok, I did tried but I was just not motivated enough because I was good at my job and I adore the people at work. Unfortunately, I was not challenged and even when I was, I did not find fulfillment when I accomplished it. Something was missing. Desire. Passion. Boredom?
This was really a life changing decision and I spent countless nights wondering what I am doing? So with careful contemplation and tons of budgeting, I got my husband's blessing and went for it. I went on Google and typed in "I quit my job and now what." Seriously, it's not like I can get a straight answer from anyone else.
I found about 55,600,000 results in 0.24 seconds. The first link I clicked on was this wonderful article by Steve DeMaio, "You've Quit Your Job. Now What?" And I realize that I am not crazy. In order for me to get to where I want to be, I have to listen to my heart. Because I really believe that if we did all the things that we are capable of doing, we would surprise ourselves.
It's been a week and I applied for AppleOne so I can get some sort of income coming in because I am not going to rely on unemployment. Not that I qualify for it...yet. The rep end up calling me and ask candidly, what was my agenda? I couldn't tell her I don't know yet but I assured her that I am going back to school and plan on taking temp jobs in the meantime. She replied with, "Well, I don't want to say we are not good at this but we are not very good at career change. Temps here are very flexible and that includes their compensation. I just want to put it out there." I am not sure if I want her to help me find a job but bottom line is, I just need a door open and I can do the rest. I am still a firm believer that temp agency are one of the best networking outlet to find your next company.
I do not want to go straight for another career, I want to really look for what is right for me. So I decided to see her in person before I make any judgment call because she is not only interviewing me, I need to interview her. Yes, I know first impression is important but we were over the phone. I don't believe an eye for and eye. Just because she is trying to weed me out of her pile of resume. I have to flip over that rock entirely before walking away. Beggars cannot be choosers but no one will stick up for yourself better than you.
I am glad you ask me what my agenda is because it made me realize that even if I have to lower my compensation...I still think I made the right decision. I know it will not be easy but we are never given anything we cannot handle.
